The Penny Bun in Askwith near Ilkley is one of the 20 cosiest pubs for autumn according to The Times newspaper.
Formerly known as The Askwith Arms and The Black Horse, The Penny Bun opened after a complete refurbishment in 2024 after being purchased in 2022 by Denton Reserve Holdings Ltd, the owners of the nearby Denton Park Estate.
Times researchers were looking for cosy pubs where you’ll find roaring open fires, candlelit dining rooms and the best, locally sourced food.
Journalist Emily Sargent writes about The Penny Bun in The Times saying:
"The name of this pub is taken from a wild mushroom harvested in the woods nearby."
"The seasonal menu changes frequently, but right now includes gnocchi with garden beetroot, pangrattato crumb and blue cheese (£20), and North Sea fish pie with cheddar mash, leeks and crushed peas (£27). The five (screen-free) bedrooms are simple and elegant, featuring work from local artists, natural tones and locally made Chapter Organics toiletries.
"The pub is set within the Denton Reserve, a 2,500-acre estate and rewilding project with fabulous, rugged walks to explore from the door."
