Work starts on replacing Bolton Abbey's stepping stones

Work has started to replace all 14 stepping stones in the River Wharfe at Bolton Abbey.

The estate say: "Following a series of storms over the past couple of winters, high river levels have seen many large trees carried downstream, causing much of the damage."

"The stepping stones form an ancient right of way across the River Wharfe and have existed for hundreds of years and replacing them is no mean feat!"

In order to begin the work, Bolton Abbey estate firstly needed to obtain a licence from the Environment Agency that allows contractors to enter the water. It then had to commission the new stones to be quarried.

The estate added: "It was then a case of waiting for the water temperature to increase and the river levels to drop to allow the contractors safe entry.

"Please be aware that the work will take place as and when the weather and river conditions allow over the next few months. The stepping stones will remain closed until the work is complete."
