Ilkley Town Council [ITC] has arranged a drop-in session on 3rd July to gather feedback from residents who feel they have been affected by the 20mph scheme introduced by Bradford Council [BMDC].
At the monthly ITC meeting on Monday 2nd June, councillors received evidence from a number of residents who attended in person how the 20mph zone and traffic calming measure are having 'disturbing unforeseen consequences'. Some of the evidence was gathered by ‘Ilkley Feedback’, an apolitical group who are gathering information from residents in relation to the 20mph zone.
Cllr Stephen Butler said:
“Residents complained about the problems caused mainly by the noise and vibration which happens when vehicles go over the humps, with damage to vehicles and pain and suffering caused to back sufferers.
“Children have difficulty getting to sleep and are then woken at 5.30am and the daily lives of some older residents are devastated by the noise of buses, vans and lorries. There is some structural property damage.”
It was in October 2022 that ITC entered into an agreement with BMDC for the whole of Ilkley to be made into a 20mph zone, which is still not completed or enforceable.
At the meeting residents said that their complaints to BMDC were largely ignored, however one pair of speed cushions had been removed.
A group of both District and Town Councillors, including Clls Loy, Nunns, Butler, Cheater and Spence, say they are determined to find out more. The drop-in session will be held at Christchurch on The Grove, on Thursday 3rd July between 5:30pm and 7:30pm.
Talking about the drop-in session Cllr Butler added:
“The purpose will be to gather evidence of problems which are arising for Ilkley’s residents; collate the results and then present them to Bradford Council.
“This is not a meeting where the issues will be debated but a genuine effort to find out facts about what has gone wrong so that it can be decided what can be done about it.
“The agreement signed in 2022 was made in the belief that the 20mph scheme would not cause harm to Ilkley and the people who live here. It appears that this is not correct as it is now clear that the lives of many are being badly affected.
"We want to get to the bottom of this and invite residents and businesses experiencing problems to come to the drop-in session to let us know what is happening.”
