Care group buys Troutbeck with plans for high-quality care home

The renovation of the former Troutbeck care home in Ilkley has begun with the new owners aiming to bring it back to life as a high-quality care home.

The historic building on Crossbeck Road, Troutbeck was once a hotel and welcomed guests such as King Charles and even hosted live music in its famous ballroom, including a short appearance by Jimi Hendrix.

Previous owners, Maria Mallaband Limited, closed the home at the start of 2024 following an inspection and inadequate rating from the Care Quality Commission (CQC).

Based in Shipley, the new owners Holden Grange Care Group, say the whole building will be restored, including the original bar, lounge areas and dining spaces, along with special features like the stained-glass ceiling.

Once complete, the development is expected to create around 60-70 new jobs, supporting both employment and local economic activity.

Holden Grange Care Group began in 1984 with Ronald and Doreen Berry and has remained a family business. Now run by Michael Berry and his sons Leon and Jason, who are supported by a dedicated team of care staff.

A spokesperson said:

“Troutbeck holds a notable place in Ilkley’s history and has long been part of local cultural conversation. The building is associated with well-known local accounts linking it to Jimi Hendrix and to King Charles, who is understood to have stayed there during visits to the area.

“Holden Grange has stated that the renovation will be carried out with sensitivity to the building’s heritage, while adapting it to meet modern care standards. Beyond construction, the care home is intended to serve local families and become part of the wider Ilkley community over the long term. At this stage, work is focused on the early phases of renovation and enabling works across the site.”

Progress of the renovations will be posted on the Holden Grange Care Group Facebook page.
