Police say there has been an increase of keyless car theft in Ilkley

Police issue warning and appeal following an increase in the keyless theft of motor vehicles in Ilkley.

Cars with keyless entry unlock automatically when the key fob comes within a short-range distance of the car.

Keyless theft, also known as 'relay theft', occurs when device is used to fool the car into thinking the car's own remote key fob is close by; this unlocks the car and allows the ignition to be started

A spokesperson for West Yorkshire Police Keighley NPT said:

"In the last 7 days there have been 2 keyless theft of motor vehicles.

"If you have any info about who may be committing this type of crime call 101 and quote 13250122205."

Police in Leeds North West have also reported an increase:

"We have unfortunately seen an increase in thefts of motor vehicles across North West Leeds. It is thought that they are being taken using a relay device.

"Land Rovers and Range Rovers seem to be the main target at the moment."

How to avoid keyless theft – top tips:

Signal-blocking pouches - Consider purchasing a Faraday pouch to keep your car key in.
Can you switch off your key? - Some offer this function, check with your manual as it may not be obvious.
Physical barriers - A steering wheel lock, a driveway parking post, a wheel clamp or, if you have one, park in your garage.
Tracking devices - Vehicles fitted with trackers have a high recovery rate when stolen.
