New Improvisation workshops start next month at Ilkley Playhouse

Ilkley Playhouse opens its doors to anyone curious about improvisation with two new monthly workshops designed to be welcoming, reflective and playful.

The sessions, led by professional facilitator and embodiment coach Chris Kenworthy, take place on Tuesday 11 November and Tuesday 9 December, both running from 11:00am to 1:00pm.

Improvisation is the art of accepting and building on ‘what is,’ with playful curiosity in the here-and-now. These two-hour workshops offer a gentle introduction to the art of improvisation, making things up as you go along, collaboratively. This can involve movement, games, stories, dialogue, reactions, characters and plot.

Chris’s mindful approach ensures extra care, clarity and support through each exercise, giving space for learning, discussion and light-hearted fun without pressure to perform or be humorous.

Chris Kenworthy said

“These classes are purposefully gentle with a more reflective and mindful approach to improvisation. That means extra care, clarity and support through every activity, with opportunities to learn, discuss and reflect - as well as laugh.

“We’ll explore our imagination, create characters and stories, and support each other through the wobbly joy of improvising - all with no pressure to perform or be funny. The games and exercises are fun, relaxed and deliberately gentle.”

Group sizes are limited to keep the atmosphere supportive and intimate, and no prior experience is required.
