Work to restore the roof of Ilkley’s 12 century manor house will start in the new year Bradford Council has confirmed.
Ilkley Manor House which dates from 1390 is an important, historic Grade I-listed building that stands on the remains of a Roman fort.
With its busy programme of cultural events and activities, as well as being a museum and permanent art gallery, Ilkley Manor House is open every weekend and is free to enter.
Some of the stone roof tiles have recently slipped so Bradford Council is commissioning contractors who specialise in historic building repairs to assess the roof and undertake any necessary repairs.
Ilkley Manor House announced earlier in the year that following discussions, an agreement was reached that the Council will fund the repairs to the roof, which is expected to cost around £100,000.
Sarah Thomas, Chair of the Ilkley Manor House Trust, told Your Ilkley at the time:
“This is such good news for us and secures the long-term future of the Trust, enabling us to keep the building as a community asset for the foreseeable future.”

Bradford Council’s Portfolio Holder for Regeneration, Transport and Planning Councillor Alex Ross-Shaw said:
“Ilkley Manor House is one of the oldest properties in the council’s portfolio and it is of huge significance locally. It is run brilliantly by the Ilkley Manor House group who put on a fantastic range of events and exhibitions throughout the year.
“It is a privilege for us to look after this important building and maintain it sympathetically so that it can continue to delight people for hundreds more years to come. We won’t know the full extent of the work to be undertaken until we start removing the roof tiles but we are keen to make sure all the work which is needed is undertaken so that the roof is fully restored.”

Scaffolding has already been erected to keep the site, and the people who visit the house, safe. Listed building consent has been agreed and the initial assessment of work is due to be carried out in the new year.
