Since 2021, runners taking part in the Ilkley Half Marathon have had the option to have a tree planted on their behalf instead of receiving a finisher’s gift.
This has led to over 7,000 native trees, such as hawthorn, oak, and rowan, being planted in the Wharfe Valley. This initiative, run in partnership with the National Trust, reflects the event’s commitment to sustainability and giving back to the local environment.
Patrick Wardle from the National Trust has been instrumental in supporting this project, and last weekend, members of the Ilkley and District Round Table and their families were out planting trees in Cray, Upper Wharfedale, as part of this ongoing effort.
In addition to its environmental work, the Ilkley Half Marathon is proud to support local charities, sports clubs, and community groups through its fundraising efforts. Each year, the Ilkley and District Round Table raises over £100,000, with recent donations made to Olicana Cricket Club, Ilkley Swimming Club, LS29 Support Group, and Ben Rhydding Scouts, among many others. All proceeds from the event contribute to the Ilkley and District Round Table’s grant-giving fund, directly benefiting the local community.
The next Ilkley Half Marathon will take place on Sunday, 13th July 2025, and for the first time, a 5K race will be introduced alongside the half marathon. This exciting new addition is a serious road race on closed roads, open to runners aged 11 and over. It’s the perfect opportunity for young athletes to experience competitive running and the thrill of crowd support.
Tickets for both races are now available at ilkleyhalfmarathon.co.uk.
