Emergency throw lines installed along Wharfe in Ilkley

New throw lines have been installed along the River Wharfe in Ilkley

A new water-safety initiative has been launched with the installation of three throw-line stations along the River Wharfe in Ilkley.

The equipment, designed to provide immediate life-saving support in emergency situations, has been placed at strategic points identified as high-risk or heavily used by the public.

The new throw-line cabinets have been installed at:

The beach – on the south bank of the Wharfe near the suspension bridge, a popular paddling area.
The beach – on the north bank near the Brook Street bridge, a location frequently used by swimmers.
East Holmes Field – the opposite riverbank to the popular beach near the suspension bridge.

The installation has been led by BMDC, working in partnership with West Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service, Friends of Ilkley Riverside Parks, and water-safety advocates. The aim is to ensure that members of the public have quick access to rescue equipment should someone accidentally fall into difficulty in the water.

A spokesperson for Friends of Ilkley Riverside Parks said:

“The River Wharfe is one of Ilkley’s greatest natural assets, but it also presents real risks. These new throw lines provide an important first response that could save lives. We hope the community never has to use them, but having them available at the right locations gives peace of mind and improves safety for everyone who enjoys the river.”

The initiative follows national guidance encouraging the installation of public rescue equipment at popular riverside locations. Each throw-line cabinet includes clear instructions and has been placed where the public can access it immediately while emergency services are on the way.

Local residents and visitors are encouraged to familiarise themselves with the new equipment and to call 999 immediately in any water-related emergency.

A spokesperson for West Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service added:

“Early intervention is critical in water rescue. These throw lines allow bystanders to help safely without entering the water themselves.”
