Bradford Council is proposing to increase the speed limit on a stretch of Moor Road between Ilkley and Burley Woodhead.
The local authority is looking to increase the limit from 30mph to 40mph on the stretch of Moor Road in Ilkley between Hangingstone Road and the existing 30mph limit at Burley Woodhead.
Following a fatal collision, a range of changes were made to the road including reducing the speed limit on this stretch from 50mph to 30mph.
This reduction was subject to a period of monitoring, which has now concluded, and it has been determined that this section of road is not suitable for such a low speed and has led to some drivers making unsafe overtaking manoeuvres.
In conjunction with West Yorkshire Police and the council’s road safety team, a decision has been made to increase the limit to 40mph for this stretch. All other changes to the road such as warning signs, lining and hazard marker posts will all remain.
A Bradford Council spokesperson said:
“The decision to increase the speed limit on this road by 10mph hasn’t been take lightly and we know this may seem like an unusual step to take but can assure everyone it is being done with advice from the police and experienced Highways engineers.
"We remain committed to ensuring speed limits are safe, consistent, and appropriate for all road users and the new 40mph will still be 10mph lower than it was originally. While this change will result in varying speed limits along the route, it reflects a balanced approach based on evidence, national policy, and professional judgement.”
Legal notices for the proposed change have been published and documents will be available to view online and at Ilkley Library.
