Cold water enthusiasts and newbies alike made a splash this weekend at Sue Ryder’s brand new cold-water challenge – The Big Dip Dales - held at Draughton Heights Campsite.
They raised an incredible £5,000 to support the charity’s expert palliative and bereavement care.
Held on Sunday 7 December at Draughton Heights Campsite located between Ilkley and Skipton, the event saw 52 brave participants plunge into the icy open water for ten invigorating minutes.
Sarah Trowers was just one dipper who took the plunge on the day. She said:
“We absolutely loved the Big Dip Dales, it was a challenge to say the least but we smashed it, we’ll definitely join in again next year!
“We have had three family members cared for at Sue Ryder Manorlands Hospice over the last two years, so we know first-hand how important fundraising is. We can’t thank the Sue Ryder staff enough for the care and support they provided our loved ones and us.”
Debbie Berry also took part in memory of her mum. She said:
“It was great to see so many people coming along to take part in the Big Dip Dales, as well as supporters cheering on from the sidelines.
"Everyone who took part seemed to embrace it and were all supporting and encouraging each other, whether in for a quick dip or lasting a few minutes. There were smiles and laughter all round, despite the cold water.”
Adam Brunskill, Senior Community Fundraiser at Sue Ryder Manorlands Hospice, said:
“We’re thrilled with the success of our very first Big Dip Dales. Cold water dipping is growing in popularity, and Draughton Heights proved to be the perfect setting for both seasoned swimmers and first-time dippers. We massively appreciate everyone who braved the dip on such a cold day!
“I'd like to say a special thank you to all of our fantastic volunteers and our hosts at Draughton Heights Campsite. This event wouldn't have been possible without them."
All money raised will help Sue Ryder continue to provide expert end-of-life care and bereavement support across the region.
