Bradford Libraries launch Summer Reading Challenge

Bradford Libraries have launched this year’s Summer Reading Challenge.

They are encouraging everyone to get creative with Bradford Libraries as they kick start the summer with their ever-popular Summer Reading Challenge.

This year the theme is Marvellous Makers and there will be lots of events and activities to support children’s creativity and reading skills throughout the summer. Children aged 4 to 12 years can sign up and receive incentives along the way to encourage reading.

Children can call in to Ilkley, Burley-in-Wharfedale, Menston and Silsden libraries to register.

Library staff will also be on hand at Bradford Literature Festival on Saturday, 6 July. Watch out for the National Literacy Trust yellow Stories Bus where library staff will be offering a treasure hunt, free book and encouraging families to sign up in the Bradford City Centre Library.

The Summer Reading Challenge is the UK’s biggest reading for pleasure programme for children, presented by The Reading Agency and delivered in partnership with libraries. The Challenge encourages children to keep reading during the school summer holidays. They set a reading goal and can read anything they enjoy! Public libraries issued over 14 million children’s books (including eBooks and audiobooks) during last year’s Challenge. The Challenge is proven to significantly improve children’s reading confidence, making sure they are ready for their return to school in the autumn. It also gives families the chance to access books and fun family activities throughout the summer – all for free. The Challenge reaches around 700,000 children each year, and 80% of children taking part last year improved their reading skills over the holidays.

Each child will receive a Marvellous Makers folder at their local library with stickers to collect; bookmark; door hanger, and if 6 books are read; a Marvellous Makers Certificate and Medal (all subject to availability). You can register free at any library within the Bradford district.
