Nicknamed Billy Whizz after ‘the fastest boy in the world’-as depicted in the Beano Comic, Leeds born Jason Robinson OBE is coming to Ilkley on Tuesday 12 May 2026.
Jason is a sporting legend who reached the summits of both Rugby League and Rugby Union. He scored a try in the 2003 Rugby World Cup Final which saw England lift the Webb Ellis Cup.
Despite his medium height of 1.73m, Jason’s presence was that of a giant as he brought his electric pace and remarkable jagged runs from rugby league. Playing as a wing in both codes, and sometimes a fullback in rugby union, Jason was noted for his speed and acceleration, side-step and ability to beat defenders. He infused professionalism in an England camp not long out of the amateur era as he helped guide his country to Rugby World Cup glory in 2003.
Jason’s unique talent had been spotted whilst playing for Hunslet Boys Club and his illustrious career began at Wigan Warriors in 1991. He was a pivotal player in Wigan’s victories of a Super League title, three Challenge Cup titles, three Regal Trophy wins, four Championships and four Premiership titles. Jason went on to earn 302 appearances for the Warriors before announcing his move to Union, days after the 2000 Super League Grand Final. Jason made his Sale Sharks debut in November 2000. He soon made a name for himself in the 15-man code and went on to play 159 games and score 248 points for the Sharks.
On February 17 2001, 26-year-old Jason made his international debut, coming off the bench for Ben Cohen, as England beat Italy 80-23 at Twickenham. He was awarded an MBE for his role in the 2003 World Cup and appointed an OBE for services to Rugby in 2008.
Jason now runs the Jason Robinson Foundation to provide free access to sport in disadvantaged areas. This spirit of the foundation mirrors Jason Robinson's journey: from a Leeds council estate to the world stage, not by luck, but by determination, resilience, and refusing to be limited by the story he inherited.
An audience with Jason Robinson OBE takes place at the King’s Hall on Tuesday 12 May starting at 7.30pm, with meet and greet from 6pm. Tickets from £35.50 available at https://www.bradford-theatres.co.uk/whats-on/an-audience-with-jason-robinson
